Many die in Angolan base collapse

By BBC| 2008

Rescuers have recovered 21 bodies from the ruins of a seven-storey police building which collapsed in Angola's capital, Luanda, on Saturday. National protection services commander Eugenio Laborinho told the Angop news agency that the remains of 10 men, 10 women and a child had been found. He said 147 people had been rescued so far from the headquarters of the police criminal investigation department. More bodies are expected to be found as the hunt for survivors continues. Officials said more than 180 people were believed to have been in the building at the time of the collapse, including 145 detainees held there for questioning. No cause for the collapse has yet been given by the authorities but Radio Ecclesia said officials had warned the criminal investigation department about the deteriorating state of the building. A seventh floor was recently added to the building, on top of which was placed a massive electricity generator, it said. Interior Minister Roberto Leal Monteiro has called on Portugal's National Civil Engineering Laboratory to investigate the collapse of the building, which was built in 1974 during the colonial era.
